5 restaurants to visit in Pretoria

I was recently involved in designing The Menlyn Boutique Hotel and their restaurant, Black Bamboo. During this time I became more and more aware that Pretoria’s food scene was evolving, menus now change with the seasons as to include the freshest local foodstuffs; local craft beers are a menu staple; burgers, pizzas, and fresh breads can all now boast the term “gourmet”; and interior design is as important to the patron as the food. It is the vibe, the feel, that makes you come back. Good service and good food is the foundation and the interior design make up the walls.

Here are a few to visit:

1.       The Black Bamboo

Black Bamboo serves fresh and innovative cuisine in an upmarket but still relaxing atmosphere. Chef Pellie comes up with amazing recipes and the menu is constantly changing, definitely a place to return to. Keep an eye open for specials occasions and live music evenings.

2.       Salt Eatery

Salt Eatery specialises in small plate dining, artisanal cured meats, and exceptional pastries. Also with a constantly changing menu you can return and always try something new! Great sliders!

3.       Burger Bistro

For pure burger pleasure! Burger Bistro has a cosy vibe and is owned by Corné Read and Jan-Hendrik van Staden. They specialise in gourmet burgers made from the freshest ingredients (my favourite is Wild Thing with fried halloumi, raspberry sauce end rocket), but also offer a few steaks and sandwiches on their menu.

4.       BICCCS

For some mind altering fresh Italian ice cream and vintage Vespa fun, BICCCS is the place to go. Also great for breakfasts - and chatting with Chef Marnus (a close friend and super cool guy).

5.       Toni’s Fully Furnished Pizza Co.

The good old faithful. Amazingly thin Pizzas with decadent topping – what could be better?
